Dear Caregivers, This past week students finished their Forward Exams. That means we completed 820 testing sessions across the last six weeks. Amazing! Thank you for your work to make sure students were at school and ready to show what they have learned this year. Results from this year's tests are projected to be shared in June. Did you see this story on Spectrum News highlighting the growth of the Fond du Lac School District and more specifically Parkside Elementary: Fond du Lac Growth We are so proud of our scholars, staff and families for working together to see this growth. Great things are truly happening here! This week we are looking forward to our 3rd-5th grade music program on Thursday, May 1. Our band, chorus and orchestra students will begin the program at 1:30pm with the musical to follow. Doors will open at 1:15pm; please enter through door 12 which is the "old" entrance in the front of the school. At the end of the program, we ask that your child remain at school until dismissal at 3:15pm to maximize learning time and ensure safety for all of our students. Here are a few important upcoming dates: April 29 - 1st grade field trip May 1 - Music program for 3rd-5th grades May 2 - No school for students (Academic Planning Day) May 7 - Walk/Ride to School Day Respectfully, Mrs. Jahn

Dear Caregivers,
As you know from a previous letter, our school conducts various safety drills throughout the school year so that all students and staff know what to do in case an emergency happens. One of the drills that we conduct involves isolating ourselves within the school due to a potentially threatening situation, such as a tornado. For this reason, today we practiced a shelter drill.
Should we ever need to do an actual shelter in place, we know that you will want to know about your child's safety and be reunited with him or her. Listed below are the specific directions for how to check on your child in the event of an actual emergency. Please keep this information handy at home so that you will know how to respond.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jahn
Parkside Principal
How to Check on Your Child
-Do NOT call the school. Telephone lines must be kept free for outgoing calls to emergency personnel. In a citywide emergency, telephone lines may be busy and totally unavailable.
Listen to the local radio stations
-Logon to the FDL School District Website
www.fdlsd.org website.
How to Pick Up Your Child in the Event of a Real Disaster
-Instructions for picking up children will be made available through the media. In some cases the students may be evacuated from the school grounds. The only way you will know where to pick them up is by the media information.
-In most cases, the school will be locked during and immediately following a crisis. No one, other than emergency personnel, will be allowed to enter until it is determined that conditions are safe.
-When it is safe to release students, there will be a reunion plan. Parents need to be prepared to check in at the reunion gate with identification. Students will not be released to anyone other than their caregiver unless we have written consent by the caregiver. This may seem inconvenient; however, we have learned that it can become very difficult to be aware of the whereabouts of every child if children are sent with a neighbor or friend without the knowledge of their caregiver.

The current State school funding formula does not allow districts to keep up with the increasing costs associated with funding school operations. If districts need additional funds to support school operations, they must ask taxpayers for approval through an operational referendum.
This scenario is not unique to Fond du Lac. In fact, the majority of Wisconsin school districts currently have active referendums to fund operational needs.
The current budget projection shows a budget shortfall of $7-9 million per year over the next four years. This projection model assumes no new funding support from the State. While we are hopeful the State will provide additional funding to districts, we are forced to plan with the assumption of only having current funds. We are asking taxpayers to support additional funds to support school operations so that the District does not have to make major cuts to staff and programming, that would impact student learning.

The Fond du Lac Board of Education voted unanimously to go to referendum on April 1, 2025, asking taxpayers to authorize the District to exceed the revenue limit for four years for maintaining operations, maintenance expenses and providing for security upgrades in the District.
Over the next few months, the District will share more information about the referendum plan through our District website, social media, local news sources and direct mail. We encourage all residents to reach out with any questions about the referendum.

We're looking forward to a week filled with learning. Did you know that sleep plays a big role in student success? Research reported by the National Institute of Health shows that children who did not get sufficient sleep had more mental health and behavioral challenges than those who got sufficient sleep. These included impulsivity, stress, depression, anxiety, aggressive behavior, and thinking problems. The children with insufficient sleep also had impaired cognitive functions such as decision making, conflict solving, working memory, and learning. Differences between the groups persisted at the two-year follow-up. Thank you for your support in helping children in your care maximize their learning opportunities by ensuring they get a good night's sleep.

This week is National Arts in Education Week, a nationwide celebration highlighting the transformative impact of the arts in education. Established by Congress in 2010, the week emphasizes the importance of arts programs. It encourages elected officials and educational leaders to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have equal access to the arts.
The Fond du Lac School District is proud of its strong arts education programs during the school day and through additional co-curricular offerings.
Let's celebrate all the great things happening in Fondy Fine Arts, with amazing students as participants and dedicated teachers and staff as wonderful stewards.
