Application Process for IA or Secretary Substitutes
The Fond du Lac School District is always accepting applications for Substitute Instructional Assistants (IAs), Library Media Secretary Substitutes and Internal Secretary Substitutes. Each of these positions has varying degrees of responsibility depending upon what talents or skills you feel you can bring to a classroom, school library or school office.
These additional subbing positions within the schools do not require licensure. Upon completion of the appropriate paperwork, you will be notified if you have been selected to serve as a substitute staff member. The various positions are listed below.
Instructional Assistant (IA) Substitute positions – In these positions, you do not need to hold a license as you will be performing duties to support a classroom or a group of students and will not be leading the classroom in instruction. You will be in a classroom or classrooms that have students with disabilities or providing one-on-one support. You should possess patience, a positive attitude, and a willingness to adapt in order to address different situations that may occur.
Library Media Secretary Substitute positions – In these positions, you would be working in the library media centers that the school district has in its elementary and middle schools. Your primary responsibilities would be book check-ins, check-outs, book shelving, and assisting children in finding books. You may be asked to cover the school office while the secretary takes her/his lunch. In some cases, the principal may request that you perform some other duties outside the library environment.
You will be trained in library check-ins, check-outs and shelving procedures by one of the school district’s library media secretaries. The training is 1-1/2 to 2 hours and you are paid for the training time.
Internal Secretary Substitute positions – These positions are varied and are, most often, at either the middle schools or Fond du Lac High School.
Attendance is primarily responsible for answering phones and listening to messages for student-related absences, checking in students who arrive late, taking phone messages for students, writing up passes for students who are leaving, and assisting parents who come to pick up their child.
Reception is responsible for answering phones, transferring calls and greeting the public. These positions would be at the Fond du Lac School District Administration Center or at Fond du Lac High School.
Student Services is responsible for answering phones, transferring calls, scheduling appointments for students and assisting students with their inquiries.
Training is provided for the Attendance, Reception and Student Services positions. The training is 1 to 1-1/2 hours and you are paid for the training time.
On some occasions, with pre-scheduled absences, you may be called several days or weeks ahead of time to arrange for coverage in these roles.
